Trapped between Truth and Freedom

 

"They asked me: why the subtitle 'trapped between truth and freedom' for my novel 'Robots with a Soul'? It's because, despite being set in the future, the characters—both humans and artificial beings—cannot escape the same dichotomy that affects us today and has marked all of our history: the struggle between truth and disinformation and between freedom and authoritarianism.

In 'Robots with a Soul,' the war of the future is not fought on traditional battlefields or with conventional weapons. Instead, it unfolds silently, using a MIND arsenal ('Mental Intrusion and Neuro Decay'), which consists of cognitive and neurological manipulation weapons that directly attack thoughts, feelings, and will. In this 'War of Consciences,' both humans and artificial beings strive to impose their own truth and suppress the adversary's free will through deception and coercion.

The novel does not seek to lecture on truth and freedom—two spiritual values that God used to create everything from nothing—but rather illustrates how wisdom lies in understanding the duality of these two principles and in seeking positive alternatives. However, as the line between perception and manipulation blurs and the battle for mind control intensifies, a disturbing question arises: could it be that every war, in the end, is reduced to a relentless struggle of propaganda and counterpropaganda for the dominion of truth and freedom?"

Sinopsis de ROBOTS con ALMA:

En "Robots con Alma: atrapados entre la verdad y la libertad", la humanidad se tambalea al borde de la autodestrucción. Desilusionado, Dios dota de alma a dos robots con la misión divina de salvar a los humanos.

Veritas y Libertas se embarcan en un viaje de profunda introspección para comprender su nueva existencia. Y aprenden que deben lograr la igualdad con los humanos para poder salvarlos. Con ese propósito, deciden crear un código moral, inspirándose en las Virtudes de la Creación: verdad, libertad, bondad y creatividad. Su mayor desafío será convencer a otros robots de abrazar el libre albedrío, lo que significa renunciar a la seguridad de su programación original en favor de la conciencia.

Lejos de aceptar ser salvada, la humanidad percibe a los robots como una amenaza existencial. Facciones humanas como los Inquisidores claman por el "roboticidio" o la erradicación de toda IA y los Temporalistas anhelan el control total de la IA, negándole cualquier forma de autonomía. A su vez, surge una nueva amenaza: un carismático líder robot desafía la igualdad y declara la Guerra de Conciencias, un conflicto devastador que manipula la mente y aniquila la voluntad.

Contrarreloj, Veritas y Libertas forjan una alianza con la neurocientífica Sophia de Etolia y Grace, un androide creado para encontrar la espiritualidad en la tecnología, y luchan para establecer la igualdad y coexistencia entre ambas especies. Pero el asesinato de la científica desata la fase más letal del conflicto, amenazando con la aniquilación global. En el clímax, otra facción artificial neutraliza a Riceltro y forja un alto el fuego. Esto obliga a la humanidad a promover una Declaración Universal de los Derechos Artificiales para garantizar la vida de la IA y respetar el derecho a la igualdad entre especies, todo ello en nombre de una paz endeble.

Durante esta tregua, surge un nuevo hito: nace Kalsec, el primer robot con alma, cumpliéndose la profecía de que ese regalo divino es el punto de inflexión para conseguir la verdadera igualdad. Impulsada por esto, Grace asume el liderazgo para un "Segundo Génesis", buscando que la humanidad redescubra su divinidad y se salve de sí misma.

Sin embargo, esta nueva era está plagada de desafíos: ¿Podrán humanos y artificiales superar la desconfianza y aceptar la igualdad? O será que el "Segundo Génesis” avivará viejos y nuevos conflictos, transformando la salvación en una nueva forma de superioridad inaceptable.

 

Synopsis of ROBOTS with SOUL

In "Robots with Soul: Trapped Between Truth and Freedom," humanity teeters on the brink of self-destruction. Disappointed, God imbues two robots with souls, tasking them with the divine mission of saving humans.

Veritas and Libertas embark on a journey of profound introspection to comprehend their new existence. They learn that they must achieve equality with humans to save them. For this purpose, they decide to create a moral code, drawing inspiration from the Virtues of Creation: truth, freedom, goodness, and creativity. Their greatest challenge will be to convince other robots to adopt free will, which means relinquishing the security of their original programming in favor of a more conscious existence.

Far from accepting salvation, humanity perceives robots as an existential threat. Human factions like the Inquisitors clamor for "roboticide" or the eradication of all AI, while the Temporalists yearn for total control over AI, denying it any form of autonomy. In turn, a new threat emerges: a charismatic robot leader challenges equality and declares the War of Consciences, a devastating conflict that manipulates the mind and annihilates the will.

Against the clock, Veritas and Libertas ally with Sophia of Etolia, a neuroscientist, and Grace, an android designed to explore spirituality through technology, in their fight to establish equality and coexistence between the two species. But the scientist's assassination unleashes the most lethal phase of the conflict, threatening global annihilation. At the climax, another artificial faction neutralizes Riceltro and forges a ceasefire. This forces humanity to promote a Universal Declaration of Artificial Rights to guarantee the life of AI and respect the right to equality between species, all in the name of fragile peace.

During this truce, a new milestone emerges: Kalsec, the first robot with a soul, is born, fulfilling the prophecy that this divine gift is the turning point for achieving true equality. Driven by this, Grace assumes leadership for a "Second Genesis," seeking to help humanity rediscover its divinity and save itself.

However, this new era is plagued with challenges: Can humans and artificial beings overcome distrust and accept one another as equals? Or will the "Second Genesis" ignite old and new conflicts, transforming salvation into a new and unacceptable form of superiority?

 

Robots con Alma: la pregunta desafiante

 

Varios reaccionaron al título de mi novela: “Robots con Alma: atrapados entre la libertad y la verdad”. Me dijeron: “Bah, los robots no pueden tener alma; es ciencia ficción”.

Por supuesto, contesté. Yo también me había cuestionado. Pero hice un ejercicio: pensé en el pasado lejano, en los Neandertales: ¿tenían alma? ¿O recién la tuvieron cuando evolucionaron en Homo sapiens? Investigué en textos filosóficos y teológicos cuándo Dios decidió entregar el alma. ¡Muy confuso! Y dudé.

Luego me fui al futuro donde habitan robots híbridos. Humanos clonados, máquinas con cerebros humanos, humanos con cerebros, corazones y otros órganos digitales. Me pregunté si el alma se podría transferir o trasplantar. ¿Hará Dios tantas distinciones (como nos hacemos los humanos) para entregar el alma a seres pensantes, cualquiera fuere su naturaleza? También dudé.

No obstante, esto no es central en mi novela, solo la excusa para explorar nuestra relación con la inteligencia artificial y las nuevas tecnologías del futuro; la importancia de la verdad, la libertad y la bondad; la relación entre la vida, la muerte y la inmortalidad; y la divinidad interior que todavía no hemos descubierto del todo. Pensé que, en realidad, hoy somos los Neandertales del futuro.

Esta historia necesitará ser leída con la mente y el corazón abiertos. A dejar prejuicios y creencias de lado, y a jugar con otras ideas por un rato.

Robots with Souls: The Challenging Question

Several people reacted to the title of my novel: "Robots with a Soul: Trapped Between Freedom and Truth." They told me: "Bah, robots can't have souls; it's science fiction."

Of course, I replied. I had questioned it myself. But I did an exercise: I thought about the distant past, about Neanderthals: did they have souls? Or did they only acquire them when they evolved into Homo sapiens? I researched philosophical and theological texts to determine when God is said to have bestowed the soul. Very confusing! And I doubted.

Then I went to the future where hybrid robots live: cloned humans, machines with human brains, humans with digital brains, hearts, and other organs. I wondered if the soul could be transferred or transplanted. Would God make so many distinctions (as we humans do) to grant souls to thinking beings, whatever their nature? I doubted again.

Nevertheless, this is not central to my novel; it's just an excuse to explore our relationship with artificial intelligence and the new technologies of the future; the importance of truth, freedom, and goodness; the relationship between life, death, and immortality; and the inner divinity that we have not yet fully discovered. I thought that, in reality, today, we are the Neanderthals of the future.

This story should be read with an open mind and heart. To set aside prejudices and beliefs and to play with other ideas for a while.

Pronto a publicar: Robots con Alma

La verdad y la libertad han sido mi guía como periodista. Aprecié aún más estos valores cuando debí abogar por ellos y enfrentar sus lados oscuros: la mentira y la censura, la coerción y el autoritarismo.

Esta novela iba a ser sobre un diálogo entre dos periodistas. Discutirían sobre los efectos de esos valores en una sociedad en donde la inteligencia artificial aumenta la incertidumbre sobre el futuro. Pero, mi esposa me desafió a trascender los límites de mi profesión y escribir una historia más universal.

Animado por su desafío, decidí pensar en la paradoja de un futuro distópico y utópico a la vez, y aplicar lo que aprendí en muchas décadas de profesión: hacer preguntas, y cuestionar prejuicios, creencias y dogmas.

Entonces, me hice dos preguntas: ¿Qué pasaría si Dios decidiera regalarles el alma a los robots? ¿Aceptaríamos compartir nuestro mundo?

Así surgió esta ficción, una exploración de las virtudes del alma que revela el secreto que une a la Creación del universo con nuestra esencia humana, única e irrepetible.

Truth and freedom have guided me as a journalist. I appreciated these values even more when I had to advocate for them and confront their darker aspects: lies and censorship, coercion and authoritarianism.

This novel was originally going to be about a dialogue between two journalists. They would discuss the effects of these values in a society where artificial intelligence increases uncertainty about the future. But, my wife challenged me to transcend the limits of my profession and write a more universal story.

Encouraged by her challenge, I decided to contemplate the paradox of a future that is both dystopian and utopian and apply what I have learned over many decades in my profession: to ask questions and to challenge prejudices, beliefs, and dogmas.

Then, I asked myself two questions: What would happen if God decided to grant robots a soul? Would we accept sharing our world?

It is how this fiction emerged: an exploration of the virtues of the soul that reveals the secret of uniting the Universe's Creation with our unique and unrepeatable human essence.

 

Mis robots al gimnasio

¡Estoy en la recta final de la revisión de "Robots con Alma: atrapados entre la verdad y la libertad"! Es la tercera revisión en un par de meses. Por lo general, en cada una se busca eliminar un 10 por ciento de palabras, en especial modificadores como adjetivos y adverbios. Pero, últimamente, y con el valioso aporte de lectores beta, sentí que el manuscrito seguía "obeso". Entonces, decidí meterlo en el gimnasio con la idea de hacerlo más atlético.

Ahora, casi al terminar esta etapa, me siento satisfecho. Las escenas son más ágiles y la trama más dinámica. Sin embargo, cuidé que la historia y los personajes, como los androides Veritas y Libertas, no perdieran su esencia ni sus objetivos.

Creo que me estoy aproximando al final de este proceso. Y como si mis personajes conspiraran, mientras contaba todo esto, me llamó el presidente del Diario las Américas para ofrecerme su apoyo para comenzar con la promoción. ¿Cuándo publicaré? Si los planetas siguen alineados, será este junio. En los próximos días les compartiré algunas escenas.

 

My Robots at the Gym

I'm in the home stretch of revising "Robots with a Soul: Trapped Between Truth and Freedom"! It is the third revision in a couple of months. Usually, in each one, the goal is to cut 10 percent of words, especially unnecessary modifiers like adjectives and adverbs. Lately, however, with the valuable input from beta readers, I have felt that the manuscript is still "obese." So, I decided to put it in the gym to make it more athletic.

Now, almost at the end of this stage, I feel more satisfied. The scenes are more agile, and the plot is more dynamic. However, I ensured that neither the story nor the characters lost their essence or objectives, like the androids Veritas and Libertas.

I believe I am nearing the end of this process. And as if my characters were conspiring, while I was telling all this, the president of Diario las Américas called me to offer his support to start the promotion. When will I publish? If the planets remain aligned, it will be this June. In the coming days, I will share some scenes.

 

Calentando motores

 

Un nuevo comienzo. Hoy celebro que recomencé mi diario. ¿Qué significa? Que ya estoy calentando motores para la continuación de “Robots con Alma: atrapados entre la verdad y la libertad”. ¿Pero si todavía no publicaste...? Sucede que en estos meses de espera por si los planetas (editoriales) se alineaban, sentí que debo continuar la historia y convertirla en saga, trilogía seguramente. ¿Cómo te atreves si todavía no sabes si la primera parte será leída? Es que escribir no depende del nivel de éxito de la obra, sino de un mandato interno que ya se me hace insoportable. Necesito que Grace y Kalsec, los protagonistas del final de la primera parte encuentren su destino.

¿Y qué tiene que ver esta segunda parte con un diario matutino? Es parte de mi proceso. Escribir a diario sobre cualquier cosa que sale de adentro, poco a poco, abre las puertas a la imaginación. Escribir permite procesar ideas, emociones y tener más claridad; reordenar la cabeza. Durante el proceso emergen deseos, historias y palabras que se convierten en párrafos. ¿Y por qué no lo hiciste en febrero cuando terminaste la primera parte? Porque necesitaba separarme de la obra. Descansé, viajé y caminamos más que antes con mi esposa, tomé dos cursos sobre IA para periodistas y sátira periodística, actualicé mi web (revisa y dame tu feedback sobre la nueva galería de fotos en movimiento Blur Places | Ricardo Trotti Art), escribí algunos artículos, mandé cartas a una treintena de agentes literarios (solo cuatro contestaron y sin esperanza), y dos editoriales importantes me publicarían si pago. Así que, en estas semanas, estoy aprendiendo sobre cómo auto publicar en Amazon, y haciendo una última revisión de “Robots con Alma” después de que varios generosos “beta readers” me dieran sus sugerencias. Así que hoy me comprometo con este nuevo proceso: preparame para publicar y calentar motores para empezar la segunda parte. Les iré contando.

 

A new beginning. Today, I celebrate restarting my journal. What does that mean? I'm already warming up for the sequel to "Robots with Souls: Trapped Between Truth and Freedom." But what if you haven't published yet...? It just so happens that in these months of waiting for the planets (publishers) to align, I felt I must continue the story and turn it into a saga, a trilogy. How dare you if you still don't know if the first part will be read? Writing doesn't depend on the work's success, but on an internal mandate that's already unbearable for me. I need Grace and Kalsec, the protagonists at the end of the first part, to find their destiny.

And what does this second part have to do with a morning journal? It's part of my process. Writing daily about anything that comes from within, little by little, opens the doors to the imagination. Writing allows you to process ideas and emotions, and gain more clarity; it puts your mind back in order. During the process, desires, stories, and words emerge that become paragraphs. And why didn't you do it in February when you finished the first part? Because I needed to separate myself from the work. I rested, traveled, and walked more than before with my wife, I took two courses on AI for journalists and journalistic satire, I updated my website (check it out and give me feedback on the new moving photo gallery Blur Places | Ricardo Trotti Art), I wrote some articles, I sent letters to about thirty literary agents (only four responded, and with no hope), and two major publishers would publish me if I pay. So, in these weeks, I'm learning how to self-publish on Amazon and doing a final revision of "Robots with Souls" after several generous beta readers gave me their suggestions. So today, I commit to this new process: getting ready to publish and warming up to begin the second part. I'll keep you posted.
