En un
buen informe del Freedom House sobre libertad de prensa en el 2012, publicado
ayer y en vísperas de este 3 de mayo cuando se celebra el Día Mundial de la
Libertad de Prensa, Ecuador y Paraguay han pasado a integrar un grupo selecto de
países con poca libertad de prensa, en el que están Cuba, Honduras, México y
Venezuela.
En
Ecuador se destacan los airados golpes del presidente Rafael Correa contra
periodistas y medios, muchas de las cuales se han revestido de legalidad y
aplicado multas, penas y castigos a través de un sistema judicial muy dependiente
del Poder Ejecutivo.
En
Paraguay se destacan las agresiones contra periodistas del sistema público de
televisión después de golpe parlamentario mediante el cual fue destituido el
presidente Fernando Lugo.
El
informe hace una revisión sobre la situación de la libertad de prensa en el
mundo, y en América, especialmente, señala que el ambiente de libertad de
prensa sigue en franco retroceso. Se remarca que la situación viene empeorando
desde hace cinco años consecutivos.

Una historia de terror:
Freedom House tiene su thinh tank en Washington DC y oficinas en una docena de países. Fue fundada por Wendell Willkie, Eleanor Roosevelt (esposa del entonces presidente Franklin Delano), George Field, Dorothy Thompson, Hebert Bayard Swope, entre otros, en 1941, más de 70 años atrás.´para promover dentro de la opinión pública estadounidense la aceptación de que el país entrara en la guerra contra los países del Eje.
Después de la guerra, Freedom House ajustó sus actividades hacia la lucha en contra del comunismo, uniéndose al aparato de inteligencia y desestabilización de Washington durante la Guerra Fría. En los años 1970, Freedom House entregaba recursos a medios que repetían la agenda política e ideológica de Washington, como Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, y en los 1980 estuvo involucrada en la guerra psicológica que desarrollaba Washington y sus aliados en Centroamérica junto a la recién creada Nacional Endowment for Democracy (NED).
Freedom House se convirtió en una de las piezas claves de los golpes “suaves” en Europa Oriental y el Cáucaso, participando activamente en el financiamiento y la promoción internacional de las organizaciones involucradas junto a la NED, la USAID, el Open Society Institute y el Project for Transitional Democracy. Cada año publica un informe titulado “El Estado del Mundo”, que divide todos los países en tres categorías: países libres, parcialmente libres o dictaduras, una división totalmente acorde a los intereses de Washington.
En 2005 Freedom House comenzó a trabajar en Venezuela con financiamiento de la USAID para asesorar y financiar a varios grupos, surgentes ONGs y proyectos de la oposición. En 2008, aumentó en 90% sus recursos hacia las organizaciones de la llamada “sociedad civil” en América Latina en comparación con las cifras entregadas en 2006.
Cuba y Bolivia fueron los países hacia donde se dirigió principalmente este incremento. En el caso de Venezuela, Freedom House lo clasificó en 2008 como país “parcialmente libre”, aumentando su presupuesto en el país a un millón de dólares.
